The microscopic world is truly amazing. We are surrounded
by millions of bacteria and other microscopic organisms,
which are essential components of the global ecosystem.
Our tools for exploringthe microbial world are limited
to the various light and electron microscopes.
While
these tools are effective, images captured from them often
lack the fine detail we see in everyday objects around
us. In addition, colours are rarely captured accurately,
and are often masked by staining techniques (in light-based
imaging), or the inability to capture colour at all (in
electron-based imaging). Finally, in almost all cases,
the bacteria are dead at the time of imaging, leaving
us to wonder what characteristics have changed.
Concrete
Bob Software is attempting to create a new resource for
digital images of microscopic organisms. Our goal is to
maximise scientific accuracy, while enhancing the colour
and lost detail of the microscopic world. We research
each bacterium extensively, collating morphologic and
topological data from many sources, before recreating
the organism in the virtual world. We consult with specialists
wherever possible, and try to capture their vision of
the living cell.
All
images in this collection are available for licensing
on a non-exclusive basis. Any of the images available
in the image browser can be used freely, although the
copyright message on the image must remain intact. Note
that these images are quite small, or have a significant
amount of detail removed as compared to the images available
through licensing.
Please contact us if you are interested in licensing an image from us. When requesting an image, please quote the selected bacteria, the image number (visible to the left of the image in the image browser) and the preferred style (visible in the upper right corner of the image browser).
If
you are interested in getting your favourite bacterium,
or perhaps the treasured organism of a loved one, recreated
in multi-colour, high-resolution, scientifically accurate
glory, please contact us. We are very interested in expanding
our collection, and such sponsorships are extremely welcome.
